Mini Projects: Cereal Edition

We’re quickly learning that when you undertake a massive project like an older home, it is necessary to interject some fun and easy projects between the larger ones so as not to lose your sanity and/or marriage. After reeling from news last week that we will most likely have to rewire our entire house over the next few years, I decided I needed a few quick project fixes to avoid feeling like I was sinking into the floorboards. It’s not possible for wood floors to liquify is it? I’m starting to believe that anything could happen in these old houses.

Anyhow, my first little weekend quickie project was to tackle a little problem Neil and I have with breakfast cereal. By problem I mean that we LOVE cereal. Clive loves cereal too, so we’re always stocked with about five different kinds of cereal. Very Seinfeld-esque huh? The problem is that it makes our little makeshift cereal home very cluttered, so I decided to replace the battered, multi-size boxes with two classy glass containers.

We snagged these gallon glass containers on sale from our local Hobby Lobby for $10 each, and they are perfect for what I eventually see our kitchen looking like. For now, they keep our cereal fresher and better looking.

Coupled with some artwork from our adorable pint-sized artist in residence next door, our “cereal nook” (read: ex microwave cabinet) is looking better for the time being.

  • Very cute and classy! I love little fixes. I can’t wait to move so I can do this sort of thing all over the place. Since we’ll be renting, big changes won’t be likely. But little tweaks? Bring them on!

I wish I had done more of it and not held off for this “ideal” situation for so long. I could have had some nice things that didn’t require all that much of an investment and were pretty neutral in appearance. Despite what some design blogs purport, not everything has to be perfectly matched to everything.

  • Ah, wiring. Yes. Wiring is the reason we 100% gutted our house. We were just going to move in, do a few tweaks here and there, but mostly live with it. But then we got the wiring estimate, and realized we’d break even if we tore everything down, rewired with no walls and then put the walls back up. So… 2 1/2 years later… We’re still putting the pieces back together.

We haven’t gotten the estimates yet, but I have a feeling that will be the case, which in some cases wouldn’t be that bad, as some of the drywall is in need of replacement, etc.

  • I think it’s the little things that can make a big difference. After reading this I glanced over at my pantry (the door is never closed) and see many-a-opportunity for making it look nicer. I should follow your lead!

It’s amazing how pretty containers make everything look more “intentional.” Like “yes, I totally mean to display my Corn Chex on the counter, where else would they be?”
