Weekend Happenings

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these hasn’t it? Our weekends over the past few months have been so random that it’s hard to make posts about them — so more often than not I just let them pass by. This weekend however, things were pretty simple: we overhauled our website.

We’ve been meaning to do it for nearly two years. It was embarrassing — clunky, ridiculously outdated and built on a theme that we don’t even use or support anymore. It was too narrow and not mobile-responsive, and it didn’t have a fraction the capabilities we’ve dreamed of adding to make things more exciting and engaging. However, as always things have been ridiculously busy, and as client work always comes first, it kept falling to the bottom of the list.

Rachel was supposed to be in town this weekend, but because of HOA, we decided to push the visit to later in the month. Neil suggested we finally just make the time, and do a blitz transfer and redesign. It wouldn’t be perfect, but it would at least get us off our old theme and closer to something more ideal. So eighteen hours later, we now have a brand new theme and design.

Our favorite things about it so far

  • It’s responsive. Still tweaking a few breakpoints, but overall, it’s working fairly impressively.
  • No more image gallery. I feel like they’re going out of fashion, and it was such a pain to maintain on an old Thesis install.
  • More SEO built into the Genesis theme, as well as a custom Google search, making our content easier to find.
  • Wider content area, meaning more room for pictures and an overall feeling of space.

I have to thank Neil for doing most of the heavy lifting. It all moved so smoothly and came together so well, I don’t know what I would do without him. I’ve still got quite a bit of fussing to do over the design but I feel as if I’ve moved into a mansion and the possibilities are endless.
