After writing my last post, things are really coming together, especially in the last month. It feels like it’s all come on really fast, and I’m sure it’s because I had a nearly two-year hiatus from active training because of pregnancy and my wrist injury. Since it’s been a bit, how about a new CrossFit training update? Here are a few of my best moments from the past month:
Overhead lifts: My overhead lifts have been traditionally my weakest area in CrossFit. I’ve never put more than 135# over my head (my body weight at the time) and that was more than two years ago. I recently got my numbers back to a 115# jerk and a 105# x 3 reps overhead squat, besting my 2013 1-rep PR by 5#. I don’t think I’ll ever be great with overhead lifts, but I’m happy with this improvement.
Weighted pull-ups: I definitely have pregnancy to thank for this. I never had more than 3 strict pull-ups before getting pregnant, now I have 15 (body weight), and can do them weighted! My current 1-rep max is 35#. I think I could do more but time and added work will tell. In addition, my regular kipping and butterfly game is feeling strong!
Gymnastics: I feel like I’ve hit the sweet strength-to-weight ratio and am enjoying my time on the rings whenever I can. I’m stringing together kipping muscle-ups in groups of three, and can do dips for days. I also feel really strong with handstand push-ups and holds. I still don’t have the handstand walks that were my goal for this year, but I really haven’t been putting the time in. I’ve been so happy just to string together muscle-ups, that was something I never thought I’d do when I started CrossFit.
Back/front squat: I’m always a bit tepid when it comes to back squats, but I recently achieved my big goal of hitting 200# for 1 rep! I tried it a few months back when Angelo first came on staff and failed it, hitting just 195, but I tried it the other day and it wasn’t hard at all. Hoping 215# is coming soon.
Other areas I’m working on…
Prepping for Whole30: Not only the Whole30 Challenge (which starts January 4 if you attend CrossFit Fringe), but just better diet altogether. We really don’t do bad, but I need to make nutrition and supplementation more focused. I’m sure that won’t be hard going into the holidays right? In all seriousness, let’s just say I’ve been reminded recently that people notice what I do and look to me as an example. I don’t think there is a not-weird way to say that.
Coaching: I’d really like to take my CrossFit L2 Seminar in 2016, so I’ve been doing a lot more shadowing and honing on my skills. It’s not just for the seminar, it’s to become more well-rounded over all.
Mobility: Mobility is a constant work in progress, but I’m really working to make it 1:1 with the time I spend working out.
Running: Dark and cold be damned, I’m fighting the urge to hybernate by running around my neighborhood. I don’t really like to run in my Nanos, so I’ve been running in NB 717. New Balance are still my all-time favorite running shoe.
Gear: Okay, this isn’t something I’m really working on, but I am enjoying some new stuff lately. I had Sadie (my Fringe couterpart) snap a few photos of me in an outfit (tank and capris) I received to review from Women’s Health Magazine as part of my Action Hero Ambassadorship. This M4M (Made For Movement) gear is amazing, I’ve never had anything quite like it on before! It is seamless, therefore no awkward lines, pinches or puckers when you move. The best way I can describe the fabric is that it feels almost as if it weaves around your body like gauze. Its super soft, and as a CrossFitter, I really appreciate how over the course of a month it hasn’t already stretched out, which is a big complaint we typically have.
I’m sure as 2015 draws to a close I’ll start making more specific short- and long-term goals, but for now, that’s my training update!
Did you accomplish your fitness goals for 2015? What are you hoping to accomplish in 2016?
Disclosure: I am participating in the Women’s Health Action Hero program and have been provided with products from New Balance and the opportunity to participate in an ambassadorship program for the period of a year in exchange for my thoughts, awareness through blog posts and opinions about any products or opportunities I partake in.
